A methodology plus the use of 4 step tools is presented, based on the experiences of Medialab in the production of maps:
1) Mapping of Identification Commune in Maps. This mapping would be exploratory in order to let geographically locate the position of relevant topics. As this is a task to place polygons in a map, either CartoDB or Mapbox could be used to do it. No more than 10 people are necessary for one or two exploration days.
2) Cadastral Mapping. This work is done by using OpenStreetMap, which aim is mapping the structures in the zones. This information is very useful when trying to do some kind of geospatial analysis. But the important thing is that it is going to give us an idea of the size of the spaces. Due to its magnitude, it shall be required to organize one or two “Mapatones” with Universities or interested groups to help with the lifting. This might required a month.
3) Mapping of Points of Interest. This means to include inside the map performed in step 2, the social interest points for the study subject, for example the bakeries, communitary centers, sports facilities and so on. For this activity we should contact a couple of people that have full knowledge of the place. A “Mapaton” sequence could be established based on the amount of zones, 10 zones per session sound reasonable. For this part we can locate information on the same OSM or in one layer of Mapbox .
4) Mapping of Social Relationships. This step is about building a relation graph between the actors and the organizations that work in each territory. This step complements information for the analysis. Gephy and graphic techniques can be used to analyze them. All of this is thought under the production of social sense from civic data, for communitary use. It would be interesting to make social relations panoramic observation of those relations that were miss on a naked eye view either for the activist intervention or decision taking. The workshop is completely introductory, in which case the methodologic development will be emphasised.
Skills: none, use of basic mapping tools
Level: low
Outcome: Development of maps about the issues raised using the a complex methodology based on civic data.
Requirements: projector, post its, markers and board.
